UGHELLI— Delta Central senatorial district chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, rose from its enlarged executive committee meeting, Sunday, with a vote of confidence on President Goodluck Jonathan and National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
The state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, his deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama (SAN), and the leadership of the party in the state, were also commended for their respective endeavours in moving the state and the party forward.
PDP Delta Central has also set up a committee to look into the party’s senatorial aspirants, pick the best candidate and advise on how to go about the senatorial election.
In the same vein, Prof. Utuama has said that the party was yet to pick a candidate for the Delta Central senatorial bye-election.
Chief John Obofukoro, who moved the motion, observed that President Jonathan and Tukur have provided credible leadership despite the current crisis at the national level of the party.
He motion was supported by Chief David Siakpere and unanimously adopted by the people at the meeting, held at the residence of the deputy governor in Udu.
Meanwhile, the meeting raised a seven-man advisory committee on the forthcoming senatorial bye-election in Delta Central, occasioned by the death of Chief Pius Ewherido.
The committee chaired by PDP South-South Zonal Chairman, Dr. Steve Oru, has former Information Minister, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, as deputy. It is to submit its report in two weeks.
Utuama, who announced the composition of the committee, listed its terms of reference to include: interacting with all relevant stakeholders; interfacing with the state governor, Dr. Uduaghan, who is the leader of the party in the state.
He also urged the committee to interact with the state chairman, the various senatorial aspirants with a view to producing the most credible candidate for the race.
He said: “No candidate has been endorsed. The governor has not endorsed any candidate neither has our national leader endorsed any. Only the best is good enough for us as a people. The time of imposition is over. I have pleaded with everybody concerned that they should leave Delta central for us.”
Utuama observed that PDP’s victory in the senatorial poll was critical to the relevance of the Urhobo in 2015, both in the state and at the national level and urged everyone to work towards archiving that goal.
“ The task before us in PDP in the forth coming senatorial by-election which will come up any moment from now is to ensure that PDP come out victorious. Victory is important, therefore, we must all work together to ensure victory for PDP. Our victory is important if we are to remain relevant in the politics of our senatorial district, our state and our country,” he said.
