Cotonou – President Goodluck Jonathan was the guest of honour at Thursday’s celebrations of the 53rd anniversary of Benin’s independence, PANA reported.

President Jonathan, who arrived in Cotonou early Thursday, attended the military and civilian parades held at the Etoile Rouge Square, along with host President Boni Yayi.

Apart from the parades, the celebrations also featured calisthenics by students, with themes such as agriculture, youth, environment, health and love for the country

highlighted in the displays.

PANA reports that this year’s celebrations were low-keyed in view of the economic

hardships being faced by many citizens.

The president has since returned home. (PANA/NAN)
