Jos — The registration of the All Progressive Congress, APC, is exciting to politicians in Plateau State, saying it has potential to provide an alternative platform to the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
Vanguard’s findings revealed that top politicians within and outside the PDP are desirous of a strong opposition party to check what some of them see as “overconfidence” of the ruling party.
A staunch PDP member who preferred anonymity told Vanguard that certain arbitrariness noticeable in the ruling party would be checked if there was an alternative platform that could challenge it.
According to him, “the general feeling among many is that no party is strong enough to challenge the PDP. Except for a few instances where strong people in the PDP left to other parties to contest against the PDP, there is really no party strong enough to face the PDP in the state.
”But this will change if we have another strong party that can also present formidable candidates on its platform. This will enhance the emergence of credible candidates from both parties.”
Vanguard learnt that such politicians see the new party as having the potential of serving as a strong electoral platform against the PDP in future elections.
