Tension is high between the people of Adani, a community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Enugu State and Fulani herdsmen whom they alleged are committing criminal acts in their area. The situation has got so bad to the extent that the Police Area Commander in Nsukka, about 45 kilometres from the community, Ros- armson Haladu, an Assistant Commissioner of police, had to relocate temporarily to Adani for peace to reign.
Crime Alert gathered that the Fulani herdsmen settled in the area for a long time and have allegedly carried out all manners of crime in form of rape, robbery and several attacks on the community at intervals.
Barely few days ago, the herdsmen allegedly raped some young girls and middle-aged women and robbed motorists along Adani – Nsukka express way of their valuables and cash, an action the community termed an attempt to chase them out of their fatherland. Based on this ugly development, the community started preparing for a show down to chase the herdsmen out of their ancestral home.
Anti robbery policemen
In the simmering feud, the Area Commander, Rose -Armson Haladu mobilized forces and fortified the area. He reportedly moved the Police Armoured Personnel carrier, APC, a team of anti robbery policemen and other Police Patrol Vans to Adani community to ensure there was no break down of law and order.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the local government area, Mr. Cornel Onwubuya told Crime Alert on phone that Fulani herdsmen have always been the problem of Adani community for a very long time, causing various degrees of trouble at intervals in the area. Onwubuya said he had several meetings with the Fulani people and their Seriki for peace to reign in the area but the herdsmen would pretend to have heard and would still engage in all manner of crime, rape and armed robbery.
“I want them to leave Adani Community if they cannot stay in peace in the area. They are troublesome, carrying out violent nocturnal criminal activities, harassing, raping and robbing, acts that are barbaric and wicked on the soil of Adani Community,” he noted.
Sources alleged that the herdsmen use all sorts of dangerous weapons to carry out their nefarious criminal activities, mounting road blocks with AK 47 rifles and charms to rob travellers of cash and other valuables.
Contacted for comment, Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amarizu said the situation in Adani Community was normal and peaceful as Police have moved in APC to patrol all the nooks and crannies of the Community. He noted that the Police met with the Seriki of the Fulani people to ensure there was peace in the community, assuring that Police have stationed the Armoured Personnel Carrier to Patrol the area.
The PPRO urged people to go about their normal businesses adding that the alleged disturbances in the community was a mere rumour to heat up the polity of security situation in the area but assured of total security.
It could be recalled that just last year at Nimbo Community in Uzo-Uwani L.G.A., two SSII Students of Community Secondary School, Nimbo were allegedly shot and killed by Fulani herdsmen at their farmland and fled the community at night.
