Medical personnel who attended a three-day sports medicine course organised by National Sports Commission (NSC) in Abuja said the course was an eye-opener for them.

The participants acknowledged that it was also a big opportunity for them to be part of the event.

They noted further that sports injuries could be minimal if the right treatment was given to the athletes and by the appropriate persons.

A senior nursing superintendent, Mr. Ige Emmanuel, stated that they had received lectures on the basic principles in sports medicine.

“The people leading us in this have been abroad to study the course generally, and we are now having the opportunity to really understand sports medicine.

A chief nursing officer, Mrs Ngozi Nwegwu, noted that the course has emphasised the need for appropriate medical personnel to be involved in all sporting activities.

“Doctors and nurses with cognate knowledge and experience should be involved, and not just persons acting as medical officials.

“This is because they are the ones who can really and effectively handle any case of injury whenever it comes up,” she said.
