PORT HARCOURT — PROTEST over the political crisis in Rivers State continued, Monday, with placard carrying demonstrators,  causing traffic in major streets of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The protesters at  Obio/Akpor council secretariat, insisted that they will continue with the protest until the suspended chairman of the council, Timothy Nsirim, his vice and 17 councillors were reinstated.

Prince Collins Onunwo, Chairman, Obio-Akpor Grassroots Development Initiative, who led the protest said: “We are here again to pass the message that Governor Rotimi Amaechi has no power to tell the people of Obio-Akpor, who to govern them.

“We want the recall of the legitimate government in Obio-Akpor. Our people take exception to the state government unsettling and turning the council and its enviable resources into a business centre and we are saying no to that.”

In another development, media aide to the Speaker, Jim Opiki, has denied reports that his boss had gone into hiding for fear of being arrested.

Opiki said: “The Speaker cannot abdicate his office. The man has raised alarm  that some persons were bent on arresting him and creating tension in the state. So far, no relevant authority had demonstrated any concern for this alarm. Under the circumstance, the man has a right to act wisely for his personal safety.”
