THE Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and other traffic management organizations have been urged to put in place a legislation that will ensure that licences of drivers driving under the influence of alcohol are revoked, Iyiola Oni, a professor of Geography at the University of Lagos has said.

The don made the call when he made a presentation on the dangers of drink driving at a capacity building workshop organized by the International Centre for Alcohol Policies, ICAP, through Global Actions on Harmful Drinking for Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC officials in Lagos.

He said: “The drunk driving intervention programme is very important for road safety in Nigeria since alcohol/drugs can alter perception, cognition, attention, balance, coordination, reaction time and other faculties required for safe driving. Alcohol use is dangerous phenomenon among drivers of all categories in Nigeria and it accounts for estimated 30 per cent road traffic accidents. Deterrence measure includes revocation of drivers’ licences and an increase in the perception of the risk of being caught.”

The training which is on how to curb the menace of drunk-driving also had some members of the Petroleum Tankers Drivers Union in attendance.

Addressing the participants before the commencement of the programme, ICAP Global Actions Country Manager, Lanre Onigbogi said the programme would help drive interventions on drunk-driving during the course of the project.
