OSOGBO—Workers in Osun State, Wednesday, practically handed the second term ticket to Governor Rauf Aregbesola to re-contest the 2014 governorship election in the state.
Posters, banners and leaflets adorned virtually all the roundabouts in Osogbo, the state capital and venue of the May Day celebration, Government Technical College,Osogbo, with inscriptions such as Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola for Second Term—Courtesy Osun Labour.
This year’s May Day celebration was a departure from last year, when Aregbesola was booed out of the venue of the rally by workers who described his administration as anti-workers.
In the address to the union, Aregbesola observed that Nigeria’s economy would be one of the most developed and strong if incomes are true reflection of productive activities.
He also described workers as the most veritable instrument in the implementation and success of government policies, adding that income should be ultimately defined in correlation to productivity.
His said: “What is appropriate is a complex decision. It is complex because it is best for worker and employer: that income is earned and it can only be earned if income is a true reflection of productivi— when productivity is the true measure of income.”
“It is a fact of life that in many cases, both public and private, that what is passed as remuneration is to a large extent a regime of unearned income.
“If all incomes are true reflections of productive activities, the Nigerian economy (nay, any economy) will be hale, hearty and strong,” Aregbesola said.
According to the governor, current salaries and allowances in the state have risen from about N1.3 billion in October 2010 to over N2 billion in April 2013.
