ASABA—DELTA State Council of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has condemned alleged refusal of the management of Daewoo Nigeria Limited in Ekpan, Delta State, to allow its workers join labour union as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution, advising the company to retrace its steps or face the wrath of labour.
Delta NLC claimed that the management of the Daewoo did not only deny its workers the right to join union, but also prevented them from participating as members of Nigeria Union of Civil, Engineering and Construction Wood Workers, NUCCEWW, an affiliate of NLC, saying such impunity could not be tolerated in a democratic Nigeria.
In a statement by its Chairman, Akporegha Wiliams, NLC fingered Daewoo’s Project Manager as the major obstacle to industrial peace and threatened to bring the full weight of labour on the company, if it failed to allow the workers join union.
NLC said: “We view this attitude by the management of Daewoo as an outright defiance of NLC’s position on anti-labour practices.
“We shall resist Daewoo’s stand and for the avoidance of doubt, Congress would strongly advise the management of Daewoo Nigeria Limited to retrace its steps and refrain from this obnoxious practice to avoid a possible face-off with NLC.”
