Brutality: Apologise now or else, nurses tell IG

IBADAN — NATIONAL President, Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Mr. Abdrafiu Alani Adeniji, has given the Nigeria Police 72 hours to accept responsibility and apologise for the brutality of some nurses last week by policemen in Ibadan.

The nurses, who were in Ibadan for the commemoration of the 2013 International Nurses Week at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan were allegedly mistaken for members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram as they were about entering the institution.

While speaking with newsmen at the end of the four-day programme, Adeniji condemned the act, stressing that if the police failed to own up to the violation of the human rights of the nurses, take responsibility for their treatment and tender an apology, all nurses in the country would meet and take a drastic action to protest the alleged police brutality.

He said: “On May 9, some of our members who came on invitation to the programme were mistaken for Boko Haram in front of  the UI gate. The members are from Delta State. The policemen who suddenly swooped on the nurses said, ‘we have come for you. We suspect you to be Boko Haram. Now, all of you are under arrest’.”

He said the shocked nurses were whisked away to the state Police Headquarters at Eleyele.

“We have strongly protested to the Commissioner of Police against the inhuman and degrading battering of our five nurses and midwives members of the organisation. It is worrisome that innocent nurses and midwives whose primary responsibility is caring for human life could be brutally treated by the police.

“We therefore demand for payment of adequate compensation for the physical and psychological damages inflicted on our esteemed members.

“IG should instil discipline in his men because some of them are not law abiding. We give the police 72 hours to take care of these nurses and apologise”, he said.
