Anambra shuts ASTA office over Okada rider’s death

BY ENYIM ENYIM
ONITSHA — THE Anambra State government has shut down a branch of its traffic agency, Anambra State Traffic Agency, ASTA, in Ogidi, Idemili Local Government Area  indefinitely, over alleged killing of a commercial motorcycle rider by persons suspected to be staff of the agency.

This followed allegation in some quarters that staff of the agency were responsible for the death of the commercial motorcyclist.

Addressing newsmen, Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chike Ohamobi, said the closure was necessary to give room for proper investigation of the circumstances that led to the Okada rider’s death.

He, however, refuted the reported death of  a couple in the accident that claimed the life of the Okada rider.

The commissioner said security agents had been directed to oversee activities in the motor parks in Onitsha and environs to ensure peace.

He also warned that government would not sit by and watch people take laws into their hands.

The commissioner said a committee had been set up to ensure that state levies for parks in the state were duly collected until the issue was resolved.
