Sylvanus Okpala Monday night received a letter from the Nigeria Football Federation, disengaging him from his job as assistant coach to the Super Eagles.

Okpala, fondly called Quick Silver in his hay days in the Green Eagles first won the Nations Cup in 1980 as a player and as an assistant coach to Stephen Keshi in South Africa last February.

When Stephen Keshi was appointed Chief coach of the Super Eagles he chose Daniel Amokachi, Okpala, Valere and Shoronmu as his assistants.

Nigeria Football Federation Vice President, Chief Mike Umeh said yesterday that Okpala’s sack was not discussed by the  board, adding that “it is also left for Keshi to decide who to work with.”

But Keshi himself has not been in the good books of the federation since the Nations Cup feud when he threatened to resign. But Federation sources said that Keshi himself travelled out of  the country Monday night without permission and may be sanctioned.

Okpala’s letter, we gathered, was signed by Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, Assistant Secretary-General, Technical. Chairman Technical Committee, Barrister Chris Green confirmed it last night, saying “it’s true that Sylvanus has been sacked. There were issues he did not handle well.”
