BY JACOB AJOM in Algeria
NIGERIA’s Under -20 team coach, John Obuh has said that part of his mission to Algeria has been achieved.
Looking relaxed and self-assured a day after his wards dispatched Congo DR from the African Youth Championship in Algeria, the sweat merchant saidthat the victory over Congo ensured the team’s qualification to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, but the unfinished business remains the successful defense of the trophy he won in South Africa two years ago.
“You know in football, after one issue comes the next. Yesterday’s (Saturday) victory delighted everybody especially me because I set two major targets for myself and the team – to qualify for the World Cup and return our trophy to Nigeria. So 50 percent has been achieved and we are looking forward to the next one”, he said.
Nigeria face Egypt, the Group A champions in Tuesday’s semi final and Obuh said his players are ready.
During a re-tournament training tour of Egypt, the Flying Eagles defeated Egypt 3-0 in their first warm-up match, two day’s later, they drew 0-0 and Obuh said the result of those friendly matches will not have bearing of his plans in the match.
“No two matches are the same. After defeating them in their first match, they went back fortified their team hence the goalless draw in the second match.
Though we expect much changes in the match on Tuesday. We are not going to allow those previous encounters determine our approach for Tuesday’s Semi final. We are ready”, Obuh said
