The United States embassy has launched the 2013 Black History Month with the screening on Monday, of the film “Django”, a 2012 American epic western film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film which parades star actors and actresses such as Jamie Fox, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson, was screened at the Ozone Cinemas, Lagos. Black History Month is regarded as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans to the growth of the United States of America.
Django was selected to kick off this years program due to its content and quality. After the sneak preview of the new film, there was also screening of a collection of movie scenes depicting the role of President Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation, showing the struggle for equality 100 years later’, with the March on Washington.
The second inauguration of President Barack Obama, as the 44th President of the US in no less way, added radiance to the celebration and the American history which becomes even more poignant.
The Sneak preview on Django was followed by screening of a film on Rosa Parks, yesterday, Wednesday February 2013 at ADRAO International school, Victoria Island Lagos. Rosa Parks would be remembered for her defiant decision not to give up her seat while she boarded a public bus and this sparked the civil rights movement.
