As the strike embarked upon by organised labour against Federal Government’s increase in petrol pump price began throughout the country yesterday, public and private businesses in Sokoto State were completely put on hold.

THE anti-fuel subsidy removal strike in Enugu State was partially observed by civil servants and those in the private sector, following the state government’s ban on public assemblies, meetings and procession until further notice.

Workers in Ebonyi State yesterday ignored directives of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, to embark on an indefinite strike to force the Federal Government to rescind its decisions of fuel subsidy removal.

Hundreds of medical doctors were on ground in Lagos at the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Park in Ojota to provide immediate medical attention to protesters who sustained injuries during yesterday’s mass action to protest the recent implementation of fuel subsidy removal by President Goodluck Jonathan, even as most public hospitals and health centres across the state were devoid of normal services as patients stayed away.

Peeved by the allegation of incitement from presidential spokesman Dr. Rueben Abati, members of the House of Representatives are vowing to make provision for subsidy in the 2012 budget for the President to implement.
