OWERRI—THE poor state of Federal and State roads in Imo State is now a source of serious concern to vehicle owners and passengers.
Gully erosion has since cut off the ever busy Orlu-Urualla-Osina road at Mbee and Umuchima, while parts of Ngor Okpala have since been cut off from the rest of Imo State.
The greatest nightmare for motorists on the Owerri-Okigwe Federal highway is located at Akabo, Ikeduru local government area of Imo State.
Commuters are now forced to spend over two hours at Akabo in an attempt to meander through the deep, swampy and water logged portion of this federal highway.
Vanguard Newspaper investigations revealed that some civil and public servants, who hitherto operated from their homes in Onuimo, Isiala Mbano and Ehime Mbano have either relocated to Owerri or now use commercial vehicles on all working days.
A civil servant, Mr. Peter Uwa, wondered why the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, refused to repair this spot before the rains set in.
Vanguard equally gathered that whenever it rains, most commercial vehicles billed for Enugu, Afikpo or Abakaliki from Owerri, now refuse to load because of the trauma they pass through at Akabo.
