Eight disqualified over badminton match fixing scandal

LONDON – Eight players involved in a match-fixing scandal at the Olympic badminton tournament have been disqualified, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed on Wednesday.

But the eight players — four from South Korea, two from Indonesia and two from China — are appealing the decision, the body said, confirming an earlier AFP report.

The BWF will hold a press conference later in the day, to answer questions both about the scandal – one of which may be whether the athletes will lose their right to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio – and the outcome of the appeal hearing.
