Court remands driver for manslaughter

A 45-year-old man, Olalekan Salami, was arraigned, yesterday, before an Ikeja High Court for manslaughter. Salami, a commercial  bus driver, was accused of  crushing a 30-year-old woman to death on the  Oshodi/Abeokuta Expressway, a fortnight ago.

He was charged with a two- count charge of manslaughter and reckless driving.

The police prosecutor, Linus Mamah, told the court that   about 1 p.m, on that fateful day, Salami had  driven his Mazda commercial bus with number-plate YA 451 MUS, on the Oshodi/Abeokuta Expressway by Union Road junction, Dopemu, adding that he drove recklessly, thereby  causing the death of one Gloria Asuquo.

Mamah stated that  the  defendant drove recklessly on the public highway without  regard for other road-users.

The offence, according to  him, “is contrary to, and punishable under Reg 36 (p) of Road Traffic Laws, Vol 7 Cap 172 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2004.”

When the charges were read to the defendant who resides at 32 Orelope Street Ifo, he pleaded guilty.

The  Magistrate, Mr E, Ogunkanmi, remanded him in prison custody with the matter adjourned to  September 25,  2012.
