A 45-year-old man, Olalekan Salami, was arraigned, yesterday, before an Ikeja High Court for manslaughter. Salami, a commercial bus driver, was accused of crushing a 30-year-old woman to death on the Oshodi/Abeokuta Expressway, a fortnight ago.
He was charged with a two- count charge of manslaughter and reckless driving.
The police prosecutor, Linus Mamah, told the court that about 1 p.m, on that fateful day, Salami had driven his Mazda commercial bus with number-plate YA 451 MUS, on the Oshodi/Abeokuta Expressway by Union Road junction, Dopemu, adding that he drove recklessly, thereby causing the death of one Gloria Asuquo.
Mamah stated that the defendant drove recklessly on the public highway without regard for other road-users.
The offence, according to him, “is contrary to, and punishable under Reg 36 (p) of Road Traffic Laws, Vol 7 Cap 172 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2004.”
When the charges were read to the defendant who resides at 32 Orelope Street Ifo, he pleaded guilty.
The Magistrate, Mr E, Ogunkanmi, remanded him in prison custody with the matter adjourned to September 25, 2012.
