Former African 400m champion and current national record holder, Innocent Egbunike has been working for Nigeria without pay since April, when he was unveiled as Athletics Federation of Nigeria head coach.
Egbunike was signed on by the National Sports Commission and seconded to the AFN to help put Nigerian athletes in shape for the London 2012 Olympics. But since then nothing in form of remuneration has been forth coming from the NSC, this is even as the Bible-belt Egbunike kept carrying on with his assignment like a devoted servant awaiting his reward in heaven.
“It is true Egbunike has not been paid his salary. He is only just working with the believe that it will be sorted out,” said a member of the AFN.
He urged the NSC to speed up the process so that Egbunike will get paid to enable him concentrate on his work.
“We saw what he did with out relay teams at the African Championships. That we won was down to his expertise and we feel that he should be rewarded so that he can do more at the Olympics,” said the official.
