Where passion is concerned, no male sports journalist and enthusiast brings more to the table than Ogechi Adiukwu,a television sports producer who has reported sports for more than a decade and who has come to stay. President of African Women Sports Reporters Unit (AWSRU), she has also served in the famed Pepsi Academy, presided over by the no-nonsense coach, Kashimawo Laloko.

She has been in and out of London over the past months, keeping track of the preparations for the Olympics and Lipstick caught up with her on her way back to the “Biggest show on Earth.” She shares her aspirations in a short chat, as well as her experience as a lady covering sports.

More ladies than ever are covering sports nowadays. To what do you attribute this?

When I started 14 years ago, there were not many ladies in my field but you know failure is an orphan but success has many parents. Maybe it’s because women now get involved in various sports that were once the preserve of men.

Do you see the women taking over?

It depends on what you mean but I have always said women are going to be the first to take the World Cup. Our single Olympic gold came from a woman, Chioma Ajunwa. The strongest athletes are Perpetua Nkwocha and Blessing Okagbare. They are pulling their weight and they may well take over. You  know how women are, very determined. Any woman you see in sports really has the passion You just covered the London Prepare series. What’s the advantage of that to us?

The London Prepare series  was just London getting a taste of the Olympics. It gave them the opportunity of checking out the security and so on. Just try outs; they want to know how they will handle the crowds, transportation, checking tickets. In fact it’s the Olympics rehearsals. Its been on over a year  and this is the final one.

What is your personal vision for Team Nigeria?

I was really heartened to know we went to Porto Novo and did well. They have cornered Africa so its time to conquer the world and if you look at the athletes, they are really determined.
