Abukakar confirmed 16th IGP

abuja—After five months and 21 days in office as Acting Inspector-General of Police, the Police Council comprising the 36 state governors, Chairman of Police Service Commission and chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan, has confirmed Mr. Mohammed Dikko Abubakar as the 16th indigenous Inspector-General of Police.

When news of the confirmation hit the Police Force headquarters, yesterday, there was jubilation among senior police officers, junior officers as well as civilian staff who said Abubakar deserved the confirmation for the pragmatic leadership and revolution he has brought to the force.

Speaking with State House correspondents  after his appointment was confirmed, the Inspector- General pledged to up the fight against security threat in the country, pledging he was committed to bequeathing a police force that Nigerians would be proud of.

He noted that the police force was committed to checkmating crime and criminality.

He said:  “We were aware of the situation before we came on board.When we came on board you are aware that police stations were being attacked, policemen were being killed, banks were being attacked, money were being stolen without any action taken.

“Today, the situation is different and you will see more action, you will see more vigour, you will see more efficiency and effectiveness in police service and performance.”

The Inspector-General, who did not mention Boko Haram, said “I will put everything humanly possible and I will put in my best to ensure the safety and  management of security in the country.”

He assured police personnel  that he would  “ give the right leadership, quality leadership that they expect to get without fear or favour  to anybody and will do justice to all at every given situation.”
