THE Nigeria Union of Pensioners in the South West, yesterday raised alarm over the continued refusal of the federal government to pay members benefits as a result of the ongoing pension probe, lamenting that Federal pensioners were suffering untold hardship.

The union appealed to the Federal government to urgently intervene in the payment of pension to the Federal workers to halt members’ hardship and untimely death of the Senior Citizens.

Addressing Chairmen and Secretaries of the union in the Zone at a meeting in Akure, Zonal Chairman of the Union, Chief Eni Olotu, said the neglect of pensioners by government was worrisome and needed urgent intervention.

He called on President Goodluck Jonathan to direct payment of their pension to halt the suffering of the pensioners and asked the government to use the fund recovered from the on-going probe of pension scam in the country to pay their entitlement.

According to them “”the fund originally belonged to the pensioners, the recovered fund should be used to pay them as most of the pensioners were suffering and dying as a result of inability to get paid Government do not have to wait until the end of the probe before pensioners are paid. They should pay pensioners it is our right not a privilege.  Many pensioners have died while awaiting their entitlement and this is not good enough.”

It will be recalled Mr. Olotu a previous forum lamented that members were languishing in abject penury as a result of the insensitivity of government to their plights.

According to him, “it is not funny, and many of our members are bedridden because of one ailment or the other. Some who are hale and hearty do not have access to money to live a good life. It is high time.
