Gunmen kill 7, injure 10 in Plateau

By Taye Obateru
Jos — Suspected Fulani herdsmen again struck in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State early, yesterday, killing seven people and injuring about 10 others.

The gunmen were said to have struck around 12.30 a.m at Rinyam-Tahoss village when the people had retired to bed, shooting sporadically into the houses.

Those killed, among them three children, were said to have been shot at close range by the attackers who were said to have been numbered more than 10.

Most of those injured who are now on admission at the Vom Christian Hospital sustained gunshot wounds or deep cuts inflicted with machetes as they tried to escape into the bush.

It was further learnt that members of the Special Task Force arrived the village about an hour after the attackers had left.

Member representing Riyom Local Government in the state House of Assembly, Mr. Daniel Dem, said  the attack on his people had continued unchecked, noting: “The attack has become a daily occurrence. Today alone, seven people were shot dead and several others are receiving treatment of gunshots and machete cuts at the Vom Christian Hospital.”

The attacks have continued despite the series of dialogue organised by the Plateau State Police Commissioner, Mr. Emmanuel Ayeni, among community leaders in the area aimed at ending the hostilities. One of such meetings was held, Wednesday, hours before the latest attack.

Last week, an armoured personnel carrier and two security operational vehicles were deployed to the area as part of efforts to check the attacks.
