ABEOKUTA — Men of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, in Ogun State, yesterday, said it had arrested one suspect and recovered four of the smuggled vehicles that broke into the convoy of Governor Ibikunle Amosun during his tour to Ipokia Local Government Area last week.
The Area Controller, Ogun State Command of the Customs, Mr. Bamidele Akande, at a briefing at the Customs Sentry in Idiroko, said his men arrested one of the drivers of the smuggled vehicles, identified as Mr. Omolegbe Toyosi.
He said the suspect was on admission at the Nigeria Customs Staff Clinic in Idiroko where he is being treated for the gunshot injuries he sustained in his right leg during the incident.
Vanguard learnt that, Toyosi was shot after he allegedly knocked down a Customs officer, Adeyemi Fatai, with one of the smuggled vehicles that broke into the governor’s convoy when he was stopped.
It will be recalled that smugglers drove dangerously in about 30 fairly-used cars of various brands popularly called ‘Tokunbo’ and forcefully broke into the governor’s convoy, which caused a stir and almost leading to a serious accident in an attempt to escape arrest by customs patrol officers pursuing them at Ajegunle, near the Idi-Iroko border town last Friday.
Gov. Amosun had gone to Ipokia as part of his tour of the local government areas in the state and was returning to Abeokuta, the state capital in the evening when the incident occurred.
Akande said efforts were on to recover the remaining smuggled vehicles involved in the incident involving Amosun’s convoy.
He displayed the recovered vehicles which included a Toyota Camry, a Golf 4, a Nissan Almeira and a Nissan Pathfinder jeep before newsmen, adding that the arrested suspected smuggler, Toyosi, would soon be charged to court.
He said: “We have apprehended four of the cars that intercepted the governor’s convoy.”
