Create homeland security ministry, Ngige tells FG

Against the backdrop of grey concerns over security situation in the country, a Lagos based legal practitioner and member of Body of Benchers, Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, has advised the Federal Government to create a ministry that would oversee and coordinate the activities of all internal security agencies in the country in the absence of synergy among the security agencies.

He said the US government created a department of Homeland Security in the aftermath of September 11 2001 terrorist attacks in America.

Speaking with journalists during an interactive section in Lagos, Ngige also stressed the need for government to enlist the support of foreign anti-terrorism outfits to tackle the issue, saying “it is no longer in doubt that the Nigerian security agencies cannot rise to the demands of the present security challenge in the country.”

He therefore advocated that the federal government should enlist the assistance and services of reputable counter intelligence and counter- terrorist agencies like Mossad of Israel, MI6 of United Kingdom, FBI and SEAL of the United States.

According to him, without the assistance of these foreign security outfits, the economic and political structures of the country would continue to be under serious threat. The senior advocate faulted the lack of information gathering from the SSS.
