…Says PDP not in a hurry to fill post
ABUJA – SECRETARY, Board of Trustees, BoT of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Walid Jibrin, disclosed yesterday that the position of a new chairman for the board had not been zoned to any geo-political zone of the country.
He also said the position had not been pencilled down to any individual, stressing that the party was not in a hurry to get a replacement for the immediate past BoT Chairman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who resigned penultimate week.
Speaking with Vanguard, Senator Jibrin described as mere speculations reports that the position had been zoned to some parts of the country or to some individuals.
Jibrin, who warned that the BoT chairman should not generate any controversy, said PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to whom former President Obasanjo addressed his letter of resignation was not even in the country for people to start making some conclusions that the chairmanship had been discussed and sealed.
He explained that PDP was capable of solving the problem, adding that when former Secretary of BoT, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, resigned, it took the board well over nine months to replace him.
According to him, ‘’the BoT chairman should not generate any controversy as the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, is not even in the country and the letter of resignation was addressed to him.
“ After due consultations, the appropriate thing will be done, all that had been reported about the issue that the position has been zoned are mere speculations as the position has not been zoned to any particular area and nobody has been pencilled down for this position.
“We will go by the constitution of the party which says that the chairman and secretary will be elected by the members and among themselves”.
For instance, when Abdullahi Adamu resigned as secretary, it took about nine months before I was elected the secretary after considerations by members of the party.
“Finally, they elected me knowing that I come from Nasarawa State and from the North Central zone and leaders of the BoT from the North Central zone endorsed my candidature as the secretary after getting unanimous support from all the zones within the BoT.
“Let every one be patient and not create unnecessary clamour. Members of BoT are highly classical and dignified ladies and gentlemen. Our president who is the leader of the party is a man of honour and integrity and our national chairman is a staunch businessman and an administrator.
“The PDP is capable of handling its own problem; we are not in a hurry and desperate to have a new chairman, it will be done at its appropriate time. We are lucky we have a national chairman who is Chairman, African Business Roundtable, and myself as secretary, coming from the Organised Private Sector, will ensure that the Nigeria economy is given a prominent place.
“We will cooperate with the President in his desire to transform Nigeria to an economic and a viable nation. Activities of our governors and ministers will be gingered from our party’s manifesto.”
