Deeply concerned with the rising number of unemployed graduates in the country, an ace journalist, Mr. Babatunde Savage, last Wednesday, organised an entrepreneurship mentoring seminar tagged: Enterprising Journalism for students of the Lagos State University-Adebola Adegunwa School of Communication (LASU-AASOC), Surulere.

Speaking at the seminar, Savage said the initiative became necessary to open the eyes of would-be journalists to see the myriad of opportunities available to them in the journalism profession.

“We discovered that there has been a common routine among journalists, whereby when they pass the age of reporting; from being a reporter to an editor and then retires, more of them end up in poverty because they lack basic ideas of specialisation opportunities, which abounds in the journalism profession.”

Speaking further, he admonished the students to avail themselves of the opportunity “to specialise in developing publication ideas; promotional activities for publication; sourcing sponsorship; collaboration and funding for magazines; contract publication for house journals and ideas on setting up non-governmental organisations and strategies to raise funds.”

Other specialised areas highlighted for students to venture into included- direct labour printing enterprise, internet publishing ideas, freelance journalism, how to run a profitable lottery promotion, viability of having a public opinion polling agency and a host of others.
