Rep rejects calls for sovereign national confab

GUSAU—CHAIRMAN, House of Representatives Committee on ICT, representing Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency, Mr. Ibrahim Gusau, yesterday, opposed any attept to convoke a Sovereign National Conference, SNC, saying it would subjugate the current National Assembly, NASS.

Gusau who was elected on the platform of All Nigeria People’s Party, ANPP, also dismissed any discussion on the issue of Northern presidency in 2015, saying that the North would cross the bridge when they get to it.

He said: “At the right time the North will decide the 2015 presidency,” even as he canvassed for constitutional roles for traditional rulers to ensure peace in the country.

Gusau who spoke in an interview with Vanguard in Gusau, said: “You see by the SNC, you will be subjugating the powers of the NASS. From the 774 local government areas of the country, the people elected their representatives from each constituency; hence if there are issues to be discussed the members should be given the mandate to express their views on the floor of the house.

“We have our procedures. Motions are raised and supported, debated and adopted on merit. So if there are issues that different sections of the country feel they want them discussed; they should call their members and brief them adequately on such major issues.”

On roles for traditional rulers, he said “We cannot run away from the traditional rulership matter especially with what is happening right now in the country. In the past, when a visitor enters a village, the traditional ruler must know the person’s identity.”
