Oyo workers suspend strike

By OLA AJAYI

IBADAN – FOLLOWING the intervention of some elders in Oyo State, the two-week-old strike called by the Oyo State Chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC,  over disparity in the N18,000 minimum wage table has been suspended for two weeks to give room for further negotiation.

The suspension of the strike was announced yesterday by Mr. Nurudeen Arowolo, Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council and the state Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Bashir Olanrewaju.

According to the labour leaders, there was agreement between leaders of the workers and the elders that the industrial crisis would be put on hold and workers would be back at their duty posts.

Responding to the decision of the workers, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bosun Oladele, urged the workers to consider the finances of the state, saying “the figures are not something that should be glanced through, but to be studied by the workers dispassionately with the aim of moving the state forward.”

Last week, members of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, NCSU, dissociated themselves from the strike.
