Flood kills Prison official in Benin


BENIN – A middle-aged staff of Nigeria Prison Service, Gabriel Osegi, was on Monday, allegedly killed in a flood following torrential rain that fell for several hours in Benin City, Edo State.

However, it could not be ascertained the number of casualties in the flood, but an eyewitnesses said that two motorcycles were recovered at the spot but only the body of Mr. Osegi was found.

Osegi, a Prison Assistant, whose wife is an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, was said to have rode his motorcycle on Ekehuan Road by Asoro slope when he ran into the flood that swept him away.

The rain which lasted for several hours began at 5 pm, and lasted till about 10 pm, flooding the area.
Eyewitnesses said he was washed away into the roadside drain where he eventually drowned before help could reach him.

When Vanguard visited the Airport Road residence of the late prison staff, sympathizers were seen comforting the widow and children.
