Teenage: Between grown up and growing up

BY SUNIL GUPTA

Teenage is the state of life from childhood to youth. This state of life is where teenagers try to understand life from parents, school teachers, friends, neighbors, television and society. During this age bracket, children grasp a lot from their surrounding and it impacts them a lot on formation of their thought process.

This is the best time of life to plant good seeds in their minds as to positive attitude toward life, emotional values, concept of unconditional love, importance of forgiveness, value of gratitude and non judgmental approach.

Unfortunately, many parents fail to handle their children’s upbringing properly.  Their view on child safety and school results, is to solely focus on  imposing their opinion without condideration for  their likes or dislikes  and it impacts negatively so much on cthe hildren’s behaviour .

Slowly the children begin to dislike what their parents say and such gaps keep increasing and there after become difficult to bridge. In the same way, many teachers fail to develop the interest of studies and the teenager’s personality.

To build up a teenager’s personality and positive attitude, the first step is having our own acceptability in teenagers mind by coming closure with patience. The key success is to “accept them as they are”. We must learn to connect with teenagers first there after it becomes easier for us to teach them.

We must set precedent in front of them as what we wish to see them doing, we must do. For example, we must love  family members or forgive family members so that they learn the same. Our deeds impact their thought processes; if they see us respecting our elders, they will learn to do the same.

We must listen to them and to understand their feelings and views. We should never leave their issues unattended as they are incompetent to handle unresolved issues and cause lot of damage in their upbringing.

We should try to develop their interest in reading good literature about relationships, successful personalities, and historical stories and help them to understand about good or bad.

We must check the impact of our disciplinary actions on their behaviour and explain later  the reason and benefit.
Last but not least,  we should never try to dictate to them. We must understand them  them prior to defining our action plan towards them. We must implement the lesson of patience to deal with teenagers and help them grow their personality and human values. Reactions to [email protected].
