After eclipsing other contestants in 2011, captain of the Linetrale Delaney Polo Club of Lagos, Mustapha Fasinro would stop at nothing to ensure he leads his team to win the Majekodunmi Cup back to back in this year’s edition of the MTN Lagos Polo tournament which kicked off Wednesday at the Lagos Polo Club.

Fasinro who doubles as captain of the club says he could lose any other trophy, but not the prestigeous Majekodunmi Cup.

In a chat with Saturday Sports Vanguard, the ebulient power-playing polo guru said, “there has been a lot of competition on and off the pitch but no enough time for the teams to express themselves to the full. It has been hectic. But if you ask me, my target is to retain the Majekodunmi Cup. It will be an honour and a remarkable achievement if we can win that again.”

Despite his interest in the Majekodunmi Cup, Fasinro stated that there were other equally glamorous trophies at stake. They incude the Dansa Cup, the Lagos Low Cup, Lagos Open, the Oba Cup, the Independence Cup, the Governor’s Cup, Italian Ambassador’s Cup, amongst others.

To do battle for the numerous trophies are equally very strong teams from Lagos, Kano, Ibadan and Kaduna. Apart from Lintrale Delany, there are others like Ericsson, Lagos Decline and Fall, Bell Oil and Gas, Lead City, Mokola from Ibadan, RTC Kano, Iba Oil and Gas, Seamans Energy from Kano, Ironclad, Total team and many more.

There are numerous stars to look out for in the tournament. Players like Babangida Hassan, Tajudeen Dantata, Adamu Attah, Adamu Yaro, Sani Dangote, Mustapha Bashiru, Prince Albert Esiri and others.

Sponsors of the event, MTN have also promised a lot for both players and spectators, particularly their clients. One of the main feature of this year’s tournament which will end on March 11 is an all female team.

Representative of the sponsors, Cherry Eremosele said the tournament was coming at a time MTN had mapped out a lot of benefits for their high value customers most of who are in polo. “The sport is in line with the core values of MTN and we will continue to associate with it for some time to come,”she enthused.
