MEND in its response to an email inquiry from Vanguardsaid: “Oil is just one of the numerous resources Nigeria has been blessed with and these governors should strive to make their states productive, harnessing their God-given resources rather than waiting for “alms” from Abuja every month.
“Nigeria is like a home with 36 family members where less than 10 members of this large family are productive in any form. The Northern governors’ claim to oil 200km offshore is a dream that will never materialize.
“Traditionally the people of the Niger Delta are fishermen who go out days into sea to fish for a living. The sea to is to us what a farm is to a Northern villager. The activities of oil companies on and offshore have impacted negatively on the livelihoods of the people of the delta.
For someone in the Sahara desert to lay claim to our fishing fields thousands of kilometers away, is not just preposterous, but also an insult”, it asserted.
