Former Green Eagles goalkeeper and coach, Joe Erico has hailed the Super Eagles for their goal-less draw against Rwanda in last Wedesday’s Nations Cup qualifier in Kigali despite contrary views by some critics.
Erico who was assistant coach with Stephen Keshi under Shaibu Amodo said that, “it could have been worse if the Eagles had lost the tie. Taking a point off Rwanda away in Kigali to me, is a good result for the team especially as it was Keshi’s first real mix of foreign and home based players.
No matter what anybody may say, it gives us an advantage against Rwanda,” he said. He said that the result and the game in particular should be the tonic for the Eagles to come home and roast Rwanda in the second leg in Nigeria.
Coach Erico, who spoke in Lagos also expressed the optimism that better days are ahead for the Eagles with the return leg tie against Rwanda, stressing that the tie has now enabled Keshi to know the team he has in terms of strength, weaknesses, quality and ability of each player when deciding the team’s selection in future.
“Since I believe he played 50-50 foreign and home based players, he can now be in pole position to use what he has seen to assess the the team, whether he has enough already or whether he has to invite more, including deciding if he should continue with the mix of players or stick with an entirely foreign based for now or focus on the home based depending on which group impressed him more.
These to me should aid him in making decisions on his line up for future games, “ Erico stressed.
