Derivation: N/Delta not overfunded – Kuku

By EMMA UJAH , Abuja Bureau Chief
ABUJA—Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs and Chairman of Presidential Amnesty Programme, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, said, weekend, that  those complaining that the Niger Delta is being over- funded are insulting the sensibilities of the people in the region.

Addressing ex-militant generals from the region in Abuja, Kuku said the current level of funding of the Niger Delta was insignificant, compared to its contribution to the nation’s economy.

He said: “Do you know what you have given to Nigeria?  You have given to Nigeria, conservatively, from the day you accepted amnesty, and destruction of pipelines, protests and agitations stopped, Nigeria had gained N1.9 million bpd.

”Translate that money, Nigeria has been gaining from your acceptance of peace N34.3 billion everyday. Put it together, in a year, that amounts to about N6 trillion.

“If in one year you give N6 trillion, what is given back to you, for us to manage to train our people, is just less than three days of the money, one year money, of 365 days, 362 days has been taken by all Nigerians, only two and a half days has been given to train our youths, then some people sit down in the comfort of what we give to them to be so insulting, to say that the Niger Delta is getting too much.  What are we getting?

“They sit down because the oil is flowing, they sit down because we have accepted peace, they sit down because we have practically made it possible to insult the sensibilities of the Niger Delta people.”
