BENIN CITY—THE Benin National Congress, BNC, a socio-cultural organisation in Edo State, Monday, said the call by Northern governors for the reduction in derivation proceeds to oil producing states and the subsequent backing of the call by the Arewa Consultative Forum was an attempt to justify the sectarian violence being perpetrated by Boko Haram sect.
In a statement in Benin City, yesterday, signed by the Director of Publicity and Intelligence of the group, Dr. David Ekomwenrenren, said the call by the Northern governors was suspicious because it came at a time the nation was battling the insurgency from Boko Haram sect.
According to the statement, “in the light of the prevailing security challenges and monumental threat to Nigeria ’s secular state status, it is appalling that the Arewa Consultative Forum will publicly back Northern governors over their demand for a new revenue formular.”
He said: “Apart from the poor timing of the agitation, there was their argument suggesting a justification of the sectarian violence of Boko Haram.
“As a socio-cultural organisation, we expect ACF to work out a new political and patriotic caution to the governors, over ambitious agitation and not to give a holistic support at a time when issues of ethnic nationalities summit, fiscal federalism or fesource control are begging for realistic attention and Northern political elements have continued to show indiscretion to them.”
“It is unbelievable that the apex socio-cultural group of the North will contemplate support for this diversionary agitation. We call on leaders of the Southern Nigeria to covey ots own ethnic Nationalities Summit to articulate its own position and be armed with it in the event of a national summit in future” it stated.
