Nine Nigerian students between ages 16 and 18, have been nominated to join other outstanding students across the globe in an annual Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC)holding in August 2012 in Washington DC, the US capital.

The nominated students are: Adesanya Ebun, Ajagunna Solape, Akinyosoye Dara, Akinyosoye Laolu and Animashaun Bolaji. Others are: Araba Pelumi, Ikeegwu Emeka, Irabor Angela and Olufon Oluwadamilola. All of Fountain Heights Secondary School, Surulere, Lagos.

Attending the world conference indicates that these students will meet with other potential young world leaders to broaden their horizons and stimulate their leadership potentials.

During the visit,  the Principal, Fountain Heights Secondary School, Mrs Delano Adebimpe, told journalists that the conference will create opportunities for  Nigeria’s representatives to explore key American cities including visits to international embassies, evaluate the nation’s inter- dependency in world trade and economics.

Delano said: ”The visit will help them  learn and study the art of conflict resolution, engage the United Nations Speaker, draft policy proposals, debate issues and work to pass resolution.”

The criteria for selection, according to Delano, among other factors, were basically on academic performance of the students and the school’s outstanding reputation in Nigeria and abroad.

Her words: “A letter dated October 12, 2011 and signed by Dr. Marguerite C Regan Ph. D, Dean of Academic Affairs of Global Young Leaders Conference said: “The conference congratulates Fountain Heights and urges the school authorities to see being nominated as a tremendous honour for your students and their parents.”

Asked the rationale for choosing Fountain Heights to nominate nine of her students for the conference, the Principal reiterated: “It was based on our reputation and the outstanding academic performance of our students over the years.”

Animashaun Bolaji, one of the nominees who said he aspires to be a chemical engineer noted: “I am going to the conference to effect a change in information/ communication technology,” adding: “I will develop new things that will make life easier.
