President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari said yesterday that the Super Eagles have to win Wednesday’s 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifying match against Rwanda in Kigali to be on track to winning back the confidence of Nigerians.
“We have to go there and win. There is nothing like taking prisoners in Kigali on Wednesday. It has to be an all-out attack and the objective should be victory”, said Maigari.
Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Stephen Keshi on Saturday completed the roster for the 22-man playing body for the match, listing 11 home boys who will square up against the same number of foreign-based pros called up for the encounter.
And on Monday, Keshi himself declared that there would be no mercy or flippancy as he approaches his first competitive match in charge of the senior team with total seriousness.
“We have been working hard all these weeks in order to get a result in Kigali and then finish up the job at home here in June. Our first target is qualification for the 2013 African Cup of Nations”, said
Keshi, who has seen his boys win two and draw two international friendlies since taking charge in November 2011.
Maigari said on Monday that the Federation has moved to mobilize all the necessary financial and moral ammunition to get the Eagles to do the job in east Africa.
“We are leaving no stones unturned. Surely, we have all learnt a big lesson from the immediate past and now, all matches will be approached with the seriousness deserving of a Cup Final”, he stated.
After failing to qualify for the 1986 African Cup of Nations, the Green Eagles appreciated the general disappointment of Nigerians and showed determination to go full blast into the qualifying campaign for the 1988 finals. In their first match in the series, on April 2, 1987, they were held 1-1 in Lome by the Hawks of Togo.
And in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Kigali on June 5, 2005, the Super Eagles had to conjure a late equalizer as Osaze Odemwingie set up Obafemi Martins.
But Maigari said a draw would not do this time. “No, we are not going for a draw. We are going to Kigali to win”, he said simply.
Among the current playing body, only Captain Joseph Yobo, goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and forward Osaze Odemwingie will recall memories of the 2005 encounter, when South African referee Daniel Bennett blows the whistle for kick-off at 3.30pm Rwandan time (1.30pm Nigeria time) on Wednesday.
The return leg will take place in Nigeria on June 17.
