President of the Athletics Federatiion of Nigeria, Solomon Ogba ha predicted that Team Nigeria will surpass their Beijing and Sydney feats at this summer’s London Olympcis Games.
Nigeria’s best performance at the Games was recorded at Atlanta 1996, where the country won two gold, one silver and three bronze medals, followed by the Sydney event, where the athletes managed to won three silver medals while at the last Games in Beijing, one silve and three bronze medals were won the the nation’s contingent.
With fears of another floppy showing at the London Games being feared by many, Ogba, a second vive-President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), said that he was confident that Nigerian athletes will win more medals than they did in the past three Olympics Games.
Ogba, while noting that preparations for the 2012 Games did not start today, said that scientific preparations had commenced a long time ago, a situation which he stressed was going to get better with the appointment of Innocent Egbunike as the chief athletics coach of Team Nigeria.
He said that concretrated camping for the London Games was going to start on July 5 in USA.
“We are going to have two camp sites in America. The Atlanta camp is for the quarter-miles and long disstance races while California will be for the sprints and jumps. With the work already on, we project that two Nigerians will be running under 10 seconds before May. We are not very far away from this goal. We can match and even better our achievements at previous Olympics but not the Atlanta Games. Our outing will be better than the Beijing feat”, said Ogba, who it would be remembered, predicted correctly that athlettic was going to fetch Team Nigeria 10 gold medals at the 2011 All Africa Games in Mozambique.
