Bauchi—Unknown gunmen, Monday night, attacked a police station and an old generation bank in Bauchi  killing a policeman and injuring another in the process.

The police later detonated 12 unexploded bombs in the affected bank.

It was gathered that the attack which occurred at 9pm claimed the life of one of the policemen on duty while another sustained serious injuries and is now receiving treatment in hospital.

An eye-witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Vanguard that they heard gunshots and loud explosion around 9pm, a situation which caused pandemonium in the area as people scampered for safety.

He added that the gun shots which lasted for about an hour caused panic in the area, saying: “We all ran inside the house and shut our doors when we heard the gun shots in order not to be injured.”

Commenting on the incident in a telephone interview, the Caretaker Chairman,  Jama’are Local Government,  Alhaji Adamu Suleman, said he had gone round the affected areas to assess the situation.

Suleman said a police station and an old generation bank were torched  by the gunmen, pointing out however, that police bomb experts detonated 12 bombs on the premises of the affected bank.

He said: “Twelve bombs were detonated in my presence this morning at the bank when I went to ascertain the situation. We are ready to support the security agency to fish out the culprits in order to ensure security of lives and property in the area.”

The state Police Commsioner, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, also confirmed the incident on the telephone, promising to give further details later as he was on his way back to Bauchi from Jama’are where he had gone to also assess the situation.
