IBADAN—STUDENTS of a private university in Oyo State, Ajayi Crowther University, owned by The Anglican Communion, Monday, engaged in violent protest over the death of a 300 level colleague who died in the institution’s health centre.
The chaotic situation in the 7-year old institution got out of hand as the protesting students burnt down a part of the school and destroyed other facilities.
To check the violent students from destroying more facilities in the school, management of the institution has ordered the immediate closure of the school.
Also, armed policemen from Oyo division have been dispatched to Oyo town where the school is located to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The institution’s spokesperson said the closure was effected to restore peace which the school had been enjoying since it was established.
Vanguard gathered that the students alleged that the school management failed in its duty to act promptly to forestall the death of the boy identified as Elvis Abu Paul, aged 22.
The students claimed that their colleague died in the institution’s health centre where he was rushed to after taking ill as a result of the carelessness of the school management.
The rampaging students destroyed the health centre, part of the perimeter fence of the main-gate at the entrance of the institution and also burnt down the Accounting and Economics Department of the institution.
A lecturer in the school, Olajide Ogunsola, from Management Information System, MIS, while narrating his ordeal said that he lost books and research materials to the crisis.
