BENIN CITY — Senator Ehigie Uzamere, yesterday, condemned the violent protest witnessed in Edo State as a result of removal of subsidy on petrol by the Federal Government.

He urged security agents to arrest and prosecute those behind the dastardly act.

He represents Edo South Senatorial District.

Meanwhile, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. David Omojola, has said that 50 persons, allegedly involved in the violent protest have been arrested by the police.

Senator Uzamere, who spoke, when he visited the Arewa communities in Benin City, frowned at media reports, that mosques were burnt in the state, saying that the rumour was being peddled by mischief makers, bent on creating unnecessary tension in the state.

Uzamere who assured Hausa community in the state of their safety, said: “Having gone round the numerous mosques in Benin City, no mosque was brunt. The rumour that a bus load of Edo indigenes was burnt and the occupants killed while traveling to Benin City from the North is completely false.

“There is no iota of truth in the rumour as the police and other security agencies have denied that claim. It was fabricated by mischief makers to justify their criminal acts. Benin City and Edo State is a perfect example of harmonious coexistence among Christians, Muslims and adherents of other faiths. We must not allow hoodlums to alter this state’s religious equilibrium.”
