LAGOS — Lagos Chapter of Society of Nigerian Artists, SNA, has called on the Federal Government to revert to the old pump price of N65 in the interest of the masses.
Reacting to the on-going struggle against the removal of fuel subsidy, Lagos State Chairman of SNA, Mr Oliver Enwonwu, said the decision by the Federal Government to remove the fuel subsidy was abrupt, ill-timed and without immediate palliative measures or long-drawn consultation with the people.
He said: “The Nigerian people demand for good governance and immediate measures to tackle the institutionalised and massive corruption, over- reliance on oil and the waste of tax payers money in running an inflated government. These, in our opinion, are the more serious and underlying issues in averting an economic crisis and national disaster.”
Also reacting, Prof. Bruce Onabrakpeya, said the idea of subsidy removal was not entirely bad since the money that would accrue to Federal Government from the removal would be used to take care of the country’s infrastructural needs.
He said: “I am not looking at the immediate suffering but the long term gains. They should try and put the refineries in order so that our refineries will work.”
