Oba of Lagos launches Olympic Countdown Clock

The countdown to the 2012 London Olympics began in Nigeria effectively on Saturday when at exactly 8.20 p.m local time, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu unveiled the Olympic countdown clock at the Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos.

President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Sani Ndanusa, representatives of First Bank, the official bankers of NOC, sports federations and the National Sports Commission were on hand to give the occasion the official clout.

Unveiling the clock mounted in the park on a high concrete cenotaph, the Lagos royalty said he was there to give Team Nigeria the desired blessing and wished the team well in the Olympics. “This year, we are going to the Olympics to compete; not just to participate,” the Oba said.

NOC President, Sani Ndanusa said the unveiling of the clock was a clear signal to athletes and officials that the much anticipated was here. “It is a timely reminder to all concerned that the London Olympics is here. Everybody has to up his/her efforts in planning towards the games. Athletes must intensify their preparations so too for the administrators,” Ndanusa said.

Chairman of the NOC Marketing sub-committee, Patrick Ukah was happy over the successful unveiling of the clock. “It shows that we have joined other members of the global Olympic Family. We need more of,” Ukah said.
