The Nigeria Premier League (NPL) says the impressive performance of the home-based Eagles against Angola’s Palankas Negras is a credit to the local league.
NPL Executive Secretary Tunji Babalola said on Thursday in Lagos that the boys should be encouraged so that they could perform better in subsequent matches.
Babalola said he was particularly impressed with the team’s composure against a full strength Angolan squad which is preparing for the 2012 Gabon/Equatorial Guinea Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
NAN reports that the friendly match was used to sharpen the competitive edge of the home-based Eagles, as well as help the Angolans to tune-up for the AFCON.
“Our boys performed creditably well against a full strength Angolan side for the AFCON.
“Their courageous display was an attestation to the rising profile of the NPL, where these players ply their trade.
“The home-based Eagles’ programme should be sustained to boost the morale of the players for them to perform better in subsequent national team assignments,” he said.
He also urged the Eagles coaches to regularly watch the local league matches to identify more players.
Babalola advised players, currently in camp, not to abuse the privilege that had been bestowed on them. (NAN)
