President Goodluck Jonathan Friday accepted the resignation of the Minister of Sport, Alhaji Yusufu Suleiman, who has picked application form to contest the next gubernatorial election in Sokoto State on the platform of the ruling People Democratic Party, PDP.
A statement by Dr Reuben Abati, SA to the President on Media and Publicity said the President” has relieved the Minister of Sports, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman of his post with immediate effect to afford him the opportunity to focus fully on the pursuit of his declared political ambition, ” adding that, “President Jonathan thanks Alhaji Suleiman for his services to the nation and wishes him success in his future endeavours”.
Until his recent redeployment to the Sports Ministry, Alhaji Suleiman was the Minister of Transport, a portfolio, many believed was more powerful than Sports minister.
The outgoing minister who was said to be unhappy with his redeployment to a less influential ministry, may have decided to remain in the Jonathan cabinet till now to improve his ailing political relevant, particularly in his state, Sokoto where he hope to actualise a governorship ambition, President Jonathan had appointed him as minister of Transport upon his declaration as a substantive President by the Senate, following the demise of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
