UMUAHIA—ABIA State governor, Chief Theodore Orji, has called on the people of the state to resist those he called unscrupulous revenue contractors who embark on collection of levies, saying the government frowned on multiple taxation.
Orji, who noted that his administration had not approved any multiple taxation, blamed the activities of the unscrupulous revenue collectors who he accused of unleashing mayhem on innocent people on old memorandum of understanding, MoU, previously signed by some of the contractors.
Governor Orji explained that the menace came as a result of previous agreements entered into in the past by some state ministries as agriculture, environment, Abia State Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies with some contractors to collect revenue.
The governor said he had warned the relevant ministries to rectify the anomalies to stop those harassing innocent citizens.
He said: “Multiple taxation is bad, I have received calls from many people complaining about this, the latest was by the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia.
“The multiple taxation is not from the government. Some of them are still based on MoU they signed long time ago. Ministries enter into MoU that was not to my knowledge, and the man will unleash mayhem on the people. I have told the ministries.
“There are unscrupulous people in town. You know there is hunger, people do a lot of things and this money does not come to government. I have warned people not to pay them.
“It is happening in many ministries. It is worse in Aba. Aba people should not be gullible. They should resist. We want to put a final full stop to it.”
