Okpe Union removes leader

By Bartholomew Madukwe
Members of Okpe Union Worldwide from the four ruling houses in Okpe Kingdom, Sunday, removed their President-General, Mr. Ralph Karieren, for alleged abuse of office. The union also disqualified him from future office.

The members unanimou-sly voted for the removal of Karieren following his alleged inability to account for some amounts belonging to the union.

Speaking to newsmen after the union’s monthly general meeting in Lagos, Secretary-General of the union, Mr. Henry Ebireri, appealed to Okpe leaders at home and abroad to rally round the acting President-General, Mr. John Ekpoke.

He said: “In this moment, our hearts are hurt. And it is very important to know that we have a duty, a mission to restore the faith of Okpe people in the integrity of the union.

“The union will continue to uplift the welfare of the people, develop and improve the economy of the kingdom, promote Okpe customs and traditions as well as position Okpe at the state, Federal and international levels.”

He also urged Okpe people not to accord respect to those who acquired their wealth illegitimately but to give due recognition to those who made the kingdom richer through their wealth of experience, financial resources and other contributions.

He argued that “Okpe kingdom is what it is today because many have failed to provide honest leadership,” and thanked top Okpe leaders for their understanding and support.

He said: “A great responsibility lies on us all and we can only succeed in shouldering the responsibility by closing our ranks and uniting our efforts in the service of Okpe Union.”
