Enugu — Forty-eight hours after the chairmanship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Mr Bonaventure Onuh, appeared at an Nsukka High Court, charged with attempt to kidnap a bank manager, another PDP councillor ship candidate in the area was yesterday arraigned in court for alleged murder.
However, there was drama as the accused, Mr Emmanuel Eze, escaped from the Enugu High Court, sitting at Enugu Ezike, shortly after the presiding judge, Justice Ray Ozoemena, had ruled that he had a case to answer in the killing of late Mr Simeon Ezeja Ali from Aji, in the area, in 2006.
The two candidates were elected at the party’s primaries to contest the December 10 local government election in the state.
One of Eze’s alleged accomplice, Innocent Eke, is already in prison custody over the issue.
According to the First Information Report, FIR, late Ali, a palm wine tapper with eight children, was murdered in 2006 when Eze, along with other accused persons, allegedly assailed him while he was on a palm tree and cut the climbing rope, as a result of which the deceased fell off the tree and died instantly.
Hearing on the mater has been adjourned to December 15.
Eze, the PDP candidate for Aji/Essodo Ward I, Innocent Eke and five others, were about six months earlier, charged for conspiring among themselves to kill the said Simeon Ezeja Ali.
Justice Ozoemena’s ruling was sequel to the application brought by the prosecuting Counsel, Uche Omeje that all those standing trial for conspiracy in the murder of Simeon Ezeja Ali be charged with murder alongside Innocent Eke who confessed to the murder of Ali in 2006.
Eze who would have been re-arraigned with Innocent Eke, however, beat the security cordon in the court as he quietly sneaked out of the court and jumped into a waiting motorcycle and melted into the air before the court officials and police could know what was happening.
Omeje who is prosecuting the matter with fiat expressed surprise at the escape of the accused person from the open court while speaking in an interview with Vanguard on the matter, saying however that the suspect was only buying time.
At the beginning of the case, nine accused persons were granted bail, out of which two have died.
Also, the Chairmanship candidate of the PDP in the area, Mr Onuh appeared before an Nsukka High Court Tuesday charged along three other persons for alleged attempt to kidnap the branch Manager of Bank PHB, Nsukka, Mr Kevin Ezeja, sometime in 2009.
