Delta CP may be prosecuted – PSC

By Festus Ahon & Godwin Oghre, Ughelli
THE Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Tsafe, may face prosecution for extra judicial killing, three weeks ago,  of Chief Ogbe Onokpite, the CPP gubernatorial candidate, at the April 26th gubernatorial election in the state.

A member of the police service commission (PSC), Dr Otive Igbubor,  dropped the hint  in an  interview with newsmen,  during the occasion of the 4th Demas Akpore Annual Memorial Lecture organized by the Ejiro and Otive Igbuzor Foundation, which held recently in Ughelli, headquarters of Ughelli North Local Government Council.

The Police Service Commissioner who affirmed that  the late politician was unlawfully and indiscriminately murdered  said, ‘’ in any modern society there are ways of dealing with any person who is alleged to be a criminal, extra judicial killing has no place in modern society and killing of anybody outside the law is condemnable and unacceptable.”

He said the PSC has repeated it clearly that there is need to have investigation of any death during police duty and assured that the case of the death Onokpite will come up to the Police Service Commission for deliberation because, according to him, ‘’ the reform of the federal government abhors anything that is not in line with modern concept of policing.”

On  what could  be the possible consequences if the PSC indicts in Delta State  Police Command over the killing of Chief Ogbe  Onokpite, Dr. Igbuzor said there are ways the PSC deals with erring officers ranging from reprimand to suspension, reduction in rank, dismissal and prosecuting, ‘’So, we look at everything depending on his merit ‘’

Family members, friends and political associates of the late politician have been complaining bitterly on the way and manner the late politician was killed in what they described as “cold blooded murder”.

The PSC member advice Deltans and all affected by the death of the politician to remain peaceful, calm and to pursue any grievance by following the rule of the law. ‘’Generally, I will advise Deltans that there is too much agonizing in the land, everywhere in the world people are struggling for change. Deltans should organize for radical change. They should not wait till 2015 and begin to run around. The time to start organizing for radical change in Delta is now. Deltans have suffered enough”.

He further said “Delta has degenerated from being on the top to being at the bottom, for some of us who have seen Delta at the top it is unacceptable, for every two patriotic Deltan, the generation in the past 12 years is unacceptable. We must mobilize and organize for radical change in Delta.”
